Week 3 of Student Teaching

Monday
Today was a good day. I had my first math lesson to teach and it went pretty well. They were playing a game with $1, $10, and $100 bills. I explained the rules and even showed how you were supposed to play, but I don’t think everyone understood. But they still seemed to have fun, whether they were doing it right or not. We also had a faculty meeting after school. Everyone really seems to work well together.
Tuesday
Today was a little rough. The students do not seem to want to listen to me. I feel like they think they don’t have to do what I say because I am not the ‘real’ teacher. It’s a little discouraging. I’m trying to be patient, but it’s so hard! However, they were very quiet when I picked them up from art in the afternoon. They did a great job walking down the hall and coming quietly into the classroom. I was really surprised. (I guess they were just worn out). I taught another math lesson that involved a game. I don’t think they understood this game either. It wasn’t until after the lesson that my CT told me it was too busy for them, she was talking about the worksheet they were supposed to fill out, and she showed me how she would do it. I get to try again tomorrow, so hopefully it will go better and I can get a grade from this worksheet.
As far as the rest of the week goes, I did math and got to grade some papers. My main issues right now are disciplining the students and timing when it comes to my lessons. I’m really going to have to work on this next week.

  1. Pacing is something you learn from experience. Make sure that you write down a self-evaluation of your lesson after you teach it so that if you teach it again in the future, you won't make the same mistake. You may be doing too many games. Stick to basics for awhile.

  2. Oh Sweet Juli! I love you for writing this post. I am feeling the EXACT same way. After teaching the entire morning today, I came back from taking my kids to Art class and my teacher said, "So...how do you think it went?" I could tell from her voice that she wasn't totally convinced that it went well. She explained that I need to clarify my expectations for the students and show them that I am a teacher, just the same as she is. They need to respect me and I will respect them. I just hope the week gets better! I am in a Title I school and there are many discipline issues; for a minute there, my CT actually thought I requested this school and I think she was about to tell me that I was crazy. Indeed I did not select this school, it was given to me. Don't give up though, I will be praying for you and please know that you are not alone!!

    God bless,
    Karen :)
